Some new and unfamiliar faces were spotted at Monument Valley High School Oct. 3-5 when 29 students from Sage Canyon Elementary School in Castle Rock, Colo., paid a visit.

The Colorado students spent the entire week in the Monument Valley area as part of a cultural exchange program. The students and attending teachers camped at Goulding’s campground and spent Wednesday morning at MVHS shadowing members of the student government from class to class. They enjoyed lunch at MVHS and returned later that afternoon to learn more about the Navajo culture during an impromptu session in the school hogan. The information session was led by members of the student council and Irene Jones, the MVHS facilitator. The Colorado students proved very interested in the lifestyles and the customs of the Navajo students.

The students returned Oct. 4 after taking a tour of the Navajo Tribal Park. The students brought chili that was combined with fresh Navajo fry bread prepared by MVHS staff to make Navajo tacos. The Colorado students learned how to make a beaded bracelet and fashioned bracelets for MVHS students and staff out of paracord. The MVHS Performing Arts team performed several tradition dances for the Colorado visitors.

The students returned on Thursday morning to spend some time helping to weed and clean the school orchard. Later that day they hiked to Teardrop Arch before returning to Colorado on Friday.

School officials from both schools deemed the cultural exchange a big success and already have plans in the works to repeat the exercise next year.
